That Person & This Person is a team-building activity that fosters a conversation on being a team player. The results of this activity serve as an ongoing guide for acceptable and unacceptable team behavior.

Running the activity:

  1. Separate the canvas in two separate areas with the following sentences (drawing is very welcome):
    * Don’t be “that person.”
    * “This person rocks!
  2. Ask participants to write comments on sticky notes and put them under this and that person.
    “That person’ is a non-team player. ‘This person’ is the ultimate team player. Everyone wants ‘this person’ on their team! Please go back in time and think about everyone with whom you have ever worked. Without mentioning names, please write down (on separate sticky notes) what you liked the most and the least about this and that person.”
  3. Discuss about the notes in the group. Consider grouping them together.

Talking about behavior can be difficult. Framing it this way (“that person did this, this person did that”) makes it easier for participants to express their feelings about behaviors with examples.

Remote-team advice: This activity works well for remote teams. Use a remote board of your choice.
